Large bullish trade in Abercrombie

Posted by aber530 | 29 Jun, 2009

Abercrombie ChartOne big investor is bullish on Abercrombie & Fitch , attempting a three-way options strategy to maximize gains from a move higher.

optionMONSTER’s tracking systems detected the purchase of 5,000 November 30 calls for $2.15, matched against the sale of 5,000 November 35 calls for $0.90 and the sale of 5,000 November 17.50 puts for $1.05. The trade produced a net debit of just $0.20 per call contract bought before commissions.

ANF is down 1.38 percent to $25.65 in morning trading. Today’s options strategy will profit if the retailer closes above $25.20 at expiration and produce a maximum profit of 2,400 percent if the stock rises above $30.

By selling puts in addition to upside calls, the trader significantly reduced his or her cost basis but is also exposed to losses on the short put position if ANF falls below $17.50. The next potential catalyst for ANF is the release of June sales on July 9.

Who shame on Abercrombie

As Jezebel also points out, this isn’t the first time Abercrombie has gotten a bad rap for questionable employment practices back in 2003 alleging that they discriminate against African American, Hispanic, and Asians by trying to create an “all-white ‘A&F look” by hiring an overwhelmingly majority white employee force. In addition, they were sued back in 2003 for “forcing” employees to purchase their clothing (denied). Sorry A&F, your days of being “cool” are over (thankfully, I was a loyal shopper at least 5 years ago. Now a days, hauling my lazy ass up to the third floor to shop at them in Cambridgeside just isn’t worth it). Proof is in the sales and a few weeks ago, Jezebel also reported on Abercrombie’s 34% drop in sales - cheaply made, over priced clothes with horrificly obscene logos on them just aren’t cool anymore. That kind of attitude is the attitude that keeps racism and elitism alive and that? Is not okay. Thankfully those A&F days are over, and my wardrobe, as I’ve been cleaning it out over the past two years, is 90% A&F free - after all I’m not a size 2 anymore and nor am I in college where wearing A&F was acceptable. I’ll stick with JCrew thankyouverymuch where at least I see a diverse sales force.

Abercrombie & Fitch

Abercrombie & Fitch dragged its feet when it came to cutting prices on its trademark tees and jeans, and teenagers responded by avoiding the retailer (scantily-clad catalog models notwithstanding).

On top of A&F’s clunker of a first quarter (read about it here, if you need something to make you wince), the company announced this week that it’s scuttling its Ruehl brand, a more upscale line that “defines the aspirational Greenwich Village lifestyle,” as its website helpfully clarifies. Five year-old Ruehl turned out to be a bit of a problem child for A&F in this more budget-conscious climate; it lost $58 million last year and sales dropped by a whopping 33% last month.Compare that to the overachieving Aeropostale: The brand’s stock has more than doubled in price and it’s had 13 quarters (that’s three years-plus) of record profit growth. Aeropostale is funneling a good chunk of its extra cash into a new brand targeting its existing customers’ younger siblings: Called P.S., the new store will sell clothes for the “‘tween” demographic of 7 to 12 year-olds. The company says it’ll open 10 P.S.’s this year and states long-term plans for more than 500 stores.

It’s an ambitious strategy, but it’s also a big gamble. This is a company that has proven it knows how to ride out a recession (even if some Walletpoppers quibble with their Jenga tower-pricing strategy of markdowns-on-top-of-markdowns). But the ‘tween category hasn’t exactly been immune to slumping consumer spending; Saks Incorporated deep-sixed its chain of tween accessories and “makeover” stores, Club Libby Lu, earlier this year.

Abercrombie Demotes Employee for Only Having One Arm

Riam Dean, a British law student, s suing abercrombie & Fitch for discriminating against her because she was born without a forearm. When the store hired Dean to work on the sales floor, nobody seemed to have a problem with her prosthetic arm, which she’s worn her whole life. And when she asked for permission to modify the company’s strict uniform rules (polo shirts, jeans, all-American heartiness) by wearing a cardigan to hide the prosthetic, her boss told her it was fine. Several days later, however, the company’s “visual team” stopped by and insisted that Dean lose the sweater. Shortly thereafter, she was sent to the stockroom for “breaking the Look Policy,” which apparently requires multiple arms. When another superior asked her to stay in the stockroom until winter rolled around, she quit, and now she’s suing. Abercrombie’s run into trouble in the past for discriminating against employees who don’t fit its athletic blond image—in 2004, the company settled a class auction lawsuit that alleged it was steering non-white job applicants into stockroom and janitorial
